Yesterday, I spent a bit of time out in the garden and patch doing my own personal mini bioblitz. Some of the highlights from the day include 2 Palmate Newts, 2 Common Frog, 1 Common Toad and lots of Tadpoles were excellent Amphibians recorded in the pond. I did a bit of pond-dipping and collected a variety of Dragonfly nymphs, Pond Skaters, Pond Snail, Water Scorpion and a Diving Bettle.
Butterflies in the garden included 2 Green-veined White, 4 Large White, 3 Peacock, 2 Tortoiseshell, 2 Red Admiral, 5 Ringlet, 3 Large Skipper and a single Speckled Wood.
Moths in the garden were few, but what lacks in quantity makes up in quality. Managed to catch a few Magpie Moths, Hebrew Character, White Ermine and 2 unidentified macro moths.
Flying invertebrates and insects: The list would be very long to include everything seen/recorder but highlight's include Hornet, 4 species each of Bumblebee and Hoverfly, 5 species of Dragonfly and 3 species of Damselfly. Some other species/families ranging from Sawflies, Mayflies, Parasitic Wasps, Beetles, Ladybirds, Grasshoppers and Weevils are just a small proportion of species seen and found during the day.
On the bird front, lots of the usual common resident species: Highlight species include Garden Warbler, Blackcap, Sedge Warbler, Whitethroat, Chiffchaff and Willow Warbler on the summer migrant front. Raptors during the day recorded include Buzzard, Sparrowhawk, Kestrel while int he evening I had fantastic views of 3 Tawny Owls and pair of Barn Owls on the farm.
